It’s nearing the time for an end-of-the-year holiday and here are some ideas for September!


1. September getaways near Singapore: Cameron Highlands

Head to Kuala Lumpur and drive up to the Cameron Highlands for a peaceful getaway! Known for their delicious strawberries, go to the Cameron Highlands Resort for an ala carte breakfast with their local strawberries. For more a truly Cameron Highlands treat, the Organic Cultural Journey takes you on a tour to the local farms, ending with a cooking demonstration where you’ll get to taste the chef’s three-course meal.

Delve into local culture by exploring the oldest Semai Tribal village, and visit the first tea plantation in Cameron Highlands. While you’re there, you can enjoy a tea tasting on a hanging cafe platform, and have a lunch picnic on a platform atop the plantation where you’ll have an amazing view.

2. September getaways near Singapore: Yogyakarta

Considered by many to be the cultural capital of Indonesia, Yogyakarta boasts amazing architecture and a rich heritage. As soon as you reach it, you can start your adventure by having a taste of gudeg, a traditional local dish with jackfruit, palm sugar, coconut milk and other spices, at the Gudeg Bu Tjitro eatery just outside the airport– talk about convenient!

You can’t leave Yogyakarta without admiring its architecture, of course. Visit the Taman Sari Water Castle with beautiful pavilions and pools, head ot the famed Prambanan Temple, and explore the Ratu Boko, where the former king of the Mataram Kingdom once lived. End your day of exploring with an Indonesian buffet at Prambanan Garden Resto, with the majestic Prambanan temple in the background. While you enjoy your meal, they even have a stage showcasing a traditional Ramayana dance performance.

The three crater lakes atop Mount Kelimutu are blue, green and red respectively– a gorgeous natural phenomenon you’d have to see to believe. The peak is also a great vantage point from which to enjoy the sunrise, providing picturesque views of the natural landscape. As you head down the mountain, don’t miss seeing the beautiful Murundao waterfall as well.

A few hours drive away, the Penggajawa Beach is also a must-see. Unlike your typical beach, this one is covered with tosca-coloured stones, hence it is known locally as Blue Stone Beach. The natural wonders don’t end there: an hour’s drive away is a hill by Nuabosi Village, where you’ll get to enjoy an aerial view of Ende town against the Flores coast.

Towards the end of the month, Belitung is a great place to visit. Known as the Seychelles of Asia, Belitung’s natural landscape looks like something out of a travel postcard. It  has fascinating granite rock formations that rise skywards, along with gorgeous turquoise waters that are perfect to snorkel in.

There’s plenty to see: at Tanjung Pendam, stroll along the beach when the tide recedes in the afternoon, with little crabs scurrying under our foot; at Pulau Batu Berlayar (or Island of the Sailing Rock), admire the rock formations that can get up to more than 10 metres tall; and at Pulau Pasir (Sand Island), you can find beautiful starfish when the sea recedes.

5. September getaways near Singapore: Tibet

Another destination that is perfect for late September, Tibet is a mesmerising destination that is located in the Himalayan mountains. Venture into the Potala Palace that is 3900 metres above sea level, where you’ll see the rooms and halls where the Dalai Lama used to live.

Other cultural places of interest include the Gandan Monastery where the Golden Tomb of Tsongkhapa is located, and the hill behind that gives you a panoramic view of the valley below; as well as Gyantse, with a fortress, stupa and monastery with the world’s largest gold gilded bronze Future Buddha statue that is really a sight to behold.
