Having no prior experience kneading or baking bread of any kind I joined Dean, owner and baker from Baker & Cook on a fun and very interesting pizza and focaccia making class.

We started all watching him as he showed us how bread should be kneaded. It turns out the most important part of bread baking is actually how you knead the dough and it does matter how hard and what direction one uses. It even matters how many times you do knead it and for how long you let it rest between messing around with it with your hands.

We got out chance to try the newly learned skills and I will happily report that I did not do too bad. In fact, I gave a few pieces of focaccia to a few of my friends and they very much enjoyed it – result!

The pizza dough, which is also available at Plank, Dean’s sourdough pizza outlet in East Coast and Namly Place, was also a lot of fun and made for a tasty lunch which we paired with a generous amount of white New Zealand wine, as it could not have been otherwise given that Dean comes from the mighty land of the hobbit.

The school offers more advanced classes where you can learn how to make more complex breads or even proper fine dining meals with guest chefs Dean works with.

This was not only a fun activity to do with a friend or a loved one but also as a team building or friend’s class. The school can also tailor make a class just for your party.

Go on, get your hands dirty and make some bread!
