10 Irresistible craft beers in Singapore to try

Interest in craft beer in Singapore has gone through the roof in the last few years. It is not only their presence in an increasing amount of bars but also the opening of craft-beer-dedicated waterholes. If you haven’t explored the best Singapore has to offer, here is our selection of the best craft beers in Singapore.

Bugis Brown

Mikkeller Bar Singapore

Opened only recently, local craft beer fans had been looking forward to this day for long. Mikkeller is a Danish brewery that, after South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand, has finally expanded into Singapore. Along with that come a few beers that were specifically made for the red dot, such as the Prinsep Pilsner, Waterloo Wit, and the Bugis Brown – all of which are only available here. Besides these three craft beers, one can also choose from more than a dozen other Mikkeller beers straight from the tap.

Monster Lager

Red Dot Brewhouse

The Red Dot Brewhouse is not only Singapore’s only family brewery but also home to the country’s only female brewer, Crystella Ng. If that isn’t special enough, you can also try a unique green beer made with spirulina. Although poison green in colour, this so-called Monster beer is actually one of their best-sellers. Head out to their Dempsey outlet on a Saturday evening to listen to two live bands and take part in their weekly speed-beer-drinking competition.

Velvets are Blue

Druggists

"beer, craft beer in singapore, singaporenbeyond"You could consider the Druggist as the Godfather of all on-tap craft beer bars in Singapore. Having started the trend about two years ago, Druggists have become a stable hot spot for all beer lovers. One of the latest favourites is the Velvets are Blue. This seasonal beer comes all the way from Copenhagen and has a beautiful light purple colour and a slight blueberry taste – totally Instagrammable.

Speaking of Instagrammable, we’ve know the best spots for sunrise and sunset photos!

Yeastie Boys Divine Hammer

Freehouse

Located on Boon Tat Street, Freehouse is a cosy second floor bar with chill-out music and yummy burger deals. With plenty of craft beers on tap as well as chilled in the fridge, one should look out for the Yeastie Boys Divine Hammer from Wellington, New Zealand. This amber ale has quite a fruity flavour and a long lasting taste. However, be quick, as you never know how long the barrel will last.

Czech Pilsner

Hospoda Microbrewery

Having grown up 20mins from the Czech border, I hold good Czech beer very dear to my heart (and my glass). The Hospoda Microbrewery at the Albert Court (just 3mins walk from Mikkeller) is one of my favourite bars in Singapore. Offering a pilsner and a dark beer, both brewed in-house, this bar is entirely unpretentious – sit down, have a beer, and chat with friends in a casual environment.

XIPA

Brewerkz

"beer, craft beer in singapore, singaporenbeyond"Their SportsHub outlet is one of my favourite places for Sunday brunch, as you can get a set meal and a full pint for a mere $20. Quiet and right next to the Geyland River, Brewerkz offers plenty of space for a relaxed family outing. XIPa has won several awards for the best microbrewery and the best beer in Singapore.

Summer Ale

Archipelago Brewery

Archipelago Brewery might not have its own bar, but is available at various locations across Singapore, including Wheeler’s Yard and The Tuck Shop. Brewing several unique beers, such as the Singapore Blonde Ale, the Summer Ale is one of my all-time favourite local craft beers. Light golden in colour, the ale has a slight fruity taste and a hoppy finish.

Mountain Goat Beer

3rd Culture Brewing Co.

Started by a young local beer lover who goes by the name of Manbeer (no joke), 3rd Culture Brewing Co. is located in the Maxwell Food Centre and offers five different and ever-changing craft beers on tap. Due to cheaper rental prices here than in flashier locations, beer prices start at $8. The plan for this craft beer bar is to even brew their very own beer by the end of the year.

BLK6.22

1925 Microbrewery

"beer, craft beer in singapore, singaporenbeyond"This dark ale has a smooth and creamy feel to it, while offering a malty barley flavour. Brewed directly behind the bar, you can be sure that your beer is fresh. The industrial interior of 1925 Microbrewery makes it a perfectly quiet and charming dinner spot. If you are lucky enough to order the last beer of a barrel, you will receive a free drink.

Red Ale

Adstragold Microbrewery (permanently closed)

Lesser known and a little hidden on East Coast Road, Adstragold Microbrewery is popular for their meat specialities. Personally I am more drawn to the beers. My recommendation is their Red Ale, which was awarded with the bronze medal at the Beerfest Asia a few years back.
