2 days of adventure in Phuket

2 days of adventure in Phuket

The biggest island in Thailand, Phuket is known for it’s many beaches, multiple cities and yes, crazy party areas. Tourists flock here due to the island’s popularity and spend most of their time at iconic spots such as Patong Beach. What many don’t know, is that Phuket is a very diverse land to explore. Due to tourists migrating to the beaches, Phuket still has the original beauty of its mountains, waterfalls and rivers untouched. There are also several nearby islands like Koh Lanta where life happens at a slower pace. An adventure in Phuket awaits!

Day 0: Arrival in Phuket

7:20PM Arrival at Phuket International Airport

As soon as you arrive in Phuket International Airport, we recommend getting an airport taxi straight to the south of Phuket as the beaches are stunning and top sights are there. The drive will be about an hour and expect to pay between 200-300 THB ($8-12 SGD) depending on whether you would want to take a minibus or taxi. Alternatively, you could always ring ahead and ask your hotel or hostel if they provide airport transfers.

10:00PM Arrive in your hotel

Upon arrival in Phuket, you can check in your hotel. Make sure you verify if you needed to request a late check in when you booked your accommodation as some hostels require you to do so. We recommend you then have an early night for your busy day ahead! However, if you are hungry, many hotels or hostels will have a restaurant open late or provide room.

Your tour tomorrow will be a challenging day tour cycle around the stunning islands near Phuket. For the 30KM cycling day tour, the cost is around 3200 THB ($125 SGD) per person as of 2016. Make sure to check out the Amazing Bike Tours website to verify the prices are up to date. You can arrange the pick up time from your accommodation when you make the booking.

What to Bring during the Day Trip :

Sports shoes suitable for cycling
T-shirt
Shorts or long pants
Sun cream
Hat
Sunglasses
Camera
Small backpack to carry these items when cycling as the mini bus doesn’t join the group on the Island of Koh Yao Noi.

Day 1: Cycling on Koh Yao Noi

7:45AM – 8:30AM Pick up From Your Hotel/Hostel

Pick up times vary depending depending on the location of your accommodation. Once picked up, you will be transported to the pier, which will take around an hour. During the transfer, your guide will introduce himself and tell you the plan for the day. By the pier, you will be told your bike number which you have to remember. This is important as your bike has been specifically set up based on your height and weight!

We recommend grabbing a quick snack for breakfast before your pickup. If your hotel doesn’t have breakfast, head to the local convenience stores which will have breakfast items such as toasted sandwiches.

9:30AM Boat Transfer to Koh Yao Noi Island

After a quick, scenic boat ride to Koh Yao Noi island, you will arrive at the pier at around 10:30am. We recommend sitting outside or on the roof of the boat on the journey. You will have uninterrupted views of the beautiful islands and beaches around you, whilst breathing in the fresh sea air and occasionally feeling the spray of the water. Just remember to wear sunscreen!

10:30AM The Cycling Journey Begins!

The majority of the cycling is at the first half of the day as it is cooler, and it will help you work up an appetite for lunch! As you set off on your bike, you will first explore the local villages. With mostly riding on country roads at first, you will quickly find yourself riding off road through small forests for your first stop at the rubber plantation. Here the guide will share his expert knowledge on how the rubber farmers work, the process of making rubber and what to look out for when riding through the farms. Riding to the centre of the plantation is quite exciting due to the winding tree roots that make for a bumpy off-road path.

After some nice photos and a few more stops around the plantation, you will find yourself back on country roads heading to the centre of the island. Look around when you are cycling and take in the range of views from white beaches and blue waters, to strikingly green rice fields and forests. Also, keep an eye out for numerous animals along the way whether typical cattle or the rarer water lizard or cobra!

12:00PM Quick Local Stop

Your second stop will be in the centre of the rice fields where you will be greeted by the friendliest lady and given free, refreshing coconuts to try. You can even eat the coconut meat with a makeshift spoon! Even if you’re not a fan of coconut, don’t miss out on the opportunity to try the local produce. It is exactly what you need to recharge your batteries for the next part of the journey.

This is the length of the journey that you will need to conserve your energy for as it involves a couple of steep hills. Cycling back on country roads and making a stop at a beautiful pier on the way, the last and steepest of the hills will take you to your lunch stop in time to rest those legs.

1:30PM Lunch!

Sitting right next to the beach with the sound of water lapping the shore and the stunning views of the beach stretching right out to the end of the island, it won’t be long before food is served. With a range of traditional Thai dishes such as beef cooked in a red curry paste, Massaman curry and Tom Yum Soup, and a typical western favourite dish of chicken and cashews, the only sounds you hear will be that of food moans. The highlight of this stop, apart from the amazing food, is the locals. They will laugh and joke with you and make you leave with a smile on your face, so make sure you let them know how much you loved their food!

3:00PM Last Leg Back to the Boat

Full and satisfied, the last remaining kilometres are flat and surprisingly easy going. Enjoy the last views of the beach before riding through local villages and smiling at the locals on the way.

4:00PM Boat Transfer and Drop Off at Accommodation

Once you reach the boat, it is an hour journey and an hour drive back to your accommodation. This time you most likely won’t get to enjoy the views as you will be in need of a nap! Once you get back to your accommodation, shower and head out for dinner.

8:00PM Dinner

Again, eating at your accommodation is always an option but, if you are staying in Karon, we highly recommend going to El Gaucho. Just a 5 minute walk from Karon Circle, you can feast your senses with prime cuts of meats and market-fresh grilled seafood. Also close by is Mint, a newly-opened restaurant and bar serving cafe style food and incredible cocktails designed by their in-house professional mixologist!

For specifically Thai and Vietnamese cuisine, check out Orient Asia. Known for their chicken and beef satay and Thai prawn salad with lemongrass and mint, you can’t go wrong with high recommendations like this. If you are looking for something more romantic and with fabulous views, head out to Joe’s Downstairs (the sunsets there are particularly breathtaking) or Mom Tri, an institution with a fabulous setting and very nice food.

If you’re not tired yet there is the option to experience what Phuket has become known for – go-go bars, ladyboy cabaret shows, live bands and international DJs. The main lively place will be Bangla Road in Patong with live music and many people! We do suggest however, to get a fairly early night for your early start tomorrow. Beware, Patong and Bangla Road is not for everyone.

For the sea cave canoe tour scheduled for tomorrow, the cost is around 3300 THB ($130 SGD) per adult and 1650 THB ($ SGD) per child (4-12) as of 2016. Make sure to check out their website for more up to date information on all of their tours and discounts. You can also pre-book your activity so you know what time to get picked up

What to Bring for Sea Cave Tour:

Swimsuit
Sun Cream
Hat
Sunglasses
Camera

Day 2: Sea Cave Canoe Tour

7:00AM-8:00AM Pick-up from Hotel/Hostel

Again, make sure you grab something to eat before you are picked up. Also we recommend asking your tour guide, when you book the tour, if you can leave the tour at the pier instead of getting your transport back to your accommodation. That way you will be closer to the airport and have time for food before your flight home. Make sure to check out of your accommodation in the morning and take your bags with you to store in the minibus at the pier. The tour company will be happy to store your luggage in the minibus, just remember to request this when you book with them.

9:00AM Boat Transfer to Phang Nga Bay

After an hours drive to the Laem Sai pier, you will then take an hour scenic boat ride to Phang Nga Bay. Here you will be ready to explore sea caves, sea tunnels and lagoons by canoe. The first canoe session will take you around Panak Island where you will see foliage covered huge rock formations and will be able to explore the caves. With two persons plus one guide in each canoe, you get a personal two-to-one tour of the island where you will learn about it’s history and about your surroundings.

The highlight of the tour is the second canoe session at Hong Island. The weather and the sea conditions will determine which famous caves and Hongs you see, as the timing to enter the Hongs  has to be perfect. The paddle guide will study the tide to enter the tunnels at the exact right time. Here you can explore the tunnels and lagoons of the Island, see various beautiful mangroves and listen to the only sounds of wildlife around you. If you are lucky, you may see some crab-eating macaque monkeys, sleeping bats, and various species of bird and fish. Relax and enjoy your time floating along the peaceful waters with breathtaking views.

12:30PM Thai Buffet Lunch

Following on from your light activity, enjoy a Thai buffet lunch on board with water and soft drinks included. The crew and the guides really make this experience as they are continuously friendly and are always open to any questions or general musings that you may have. If you would like to show your appreciation, remember to bring some spare cash with you to tip them at the end of the tour.

2:00PM Arrive to Lawa Island

Here the boat will stop for you to have an hour to yourself. Whether you want to swim, self-paddle, snorkel or relax on the beach, this hour is yours to bask in the beauty of the Thai islands. Soon you will have to head for Laem Sai Pier again for the transfers back to your accommodation.

4:00PM Head to Airport

Leave the tour here and take a taxi back to Phuket International Airport. Depending on the traffic, it could take 20 minutes or more.

4:30PM Dinner

For good food close to the airport, head to Lee Pizzeria and Restaurant. A perfect place to dig your feet in the sand and to have some great food. With a view over the beach, you can spend your last couple of hours soaking up the sun and saying your goodbyes to Phuket.

If you are not feeling like pizza, just as good alternative options are Phen’s Restaurant Bar & Coffee and Phuket Airport Suites and Lounge Club 96. With friendly staff, well flavoured and freshly cooked food at Phens, enjoy a sea view while dining by the waves. For a more modern and trendy atmosphere, The Lounge Club 96 is the place to relax before your journey.
