Krabi- Exploring the Beaches and Paradise Islands

Krabi- Exploring the Beaches and Paradise Islands

Krabi is one of Thailand’s busiest and most sought after beach towns in the Andaman sea coast. The region’s beaches, limestone pillars and flaky golden sand give, even the most well-traveled globetrotters, serious doses of wanderlust.

A little secret to enjoy this piece of paradise even better is to stay at Ao Nang town instead of Krabi. Ao Nang is only 16km away from Krabi.

One thing that you can be sure of on any visit to Ao Nang is a vibrant assortment of tourists and a small-town feel. The area is so small that you can walk from one end of the town to the other in just 30 minutes.

It has that great small-town feel that’s hard to get in Thailand while being close to idyllic beaches and paradise islands. You know the beaches that are spread over picturesque Thai postcards? Yes, those ones!

Day 1 to Krabi,Thailand

Singapore to Krabi

Upon your arrival in Ao Nang, why not take the time to unwind and chill before you boat off to see the surrounding islands and beaches? You can book the trips you wish to go on with any of the local tour operators. So maybe start by hiring a bike for SGD 7.00 and going around the different tour companies checking prices and excursions? If you’re feeling a little too tired for that, take a stroll around town instead and pop into any agencies that you see along the way.

Depending on how early you arrive, you might have time to try your hand at kayaking, head down to Ao Nang’s 1-kilometer long beach to explore the delicate coves and beach surroundings. A kayak can be rented for SGD 19.00 and shared between two persons (it’s tough work on the arms so it’s best to share the exercise and the fun with someone). This is a nice relaxing way to spend a few hours and to take in your new surroundings at a slower pace. If you haven’t had enough of the water after kayaking, get a close-up look at what’s lying under the ocean with a mask and a snorkel.

Once the sun goes down, immerse yourself in Ao Nang’s lively nightlife scene by starting off with a beer or cocktail at the chilled Last Café, located right on the southern end of the beach. This place is alive every night with beachside barbecues, DJ shows and fire dancers. If you are looking for something more romantic the Beach Bar from Ao Nang Villa Resort is a fun place to enjoy good music on a beach front location.

Day 2 in Krabi, Thailand

Poda Island, Tub Island, Chicken Island & Pranang Cave

After a chilled first night, start day two early by going on what’s called the Krabi 4-island tour that’s offered by Krabi Tourism. You’ll be picked up from your hotel between 8 and 8:30am and you’ll be on a boat and out in the ocean by 9am.

On your first stop at Phra Nang Beach, a beautiful secluded peninsular beach with a cave, you’ll be given free time for swimming, exploring, taking pictures and sunbathing. The second stop is Tup Island, a picturesque tropical beach with white powdery sand where you’ll have more time to relax and sunbathe or you can grab a snorkel and mask and get up and close with the marine life of the island. From there it’s on to Chicken Island. A national landmark that got its name from the shape of a limestone rock on the island, snorkelling is a must here as the conditions are perfect. The water is warm, clear and you can see all kinds of coral.

Lastly, the final stop of the day will be at Poda Island. They leave the best until last as Poda Island is often referred to as the jewel of the Andaman Sea’s crown. It’s got a bamboo plantation, rocky cliffs and a tropical beach that’s postcard worthy. You’ll get to enjoy a picnic lunch with your licensed guide and the rest of the tour group before making your way back to Ao Nang for 3pm.

If you’d like to take a long tail boat for the tour, expect to pay SGD 26.00. If you’d like things to move a little quicker, you can take a speedboat tour for SGD 39.00 per person. This tour does fill up pretty quickly so be sure to book your place the day before you wish to do it.

After the boat trip you can relax by the hotel’s pool or go for a revigorating massage. At Boossabakorn Spa you can choose from a traditional Thai massage to a relaxing hot coconut oil massage.Book in advance via their website or calling to +66 075 695 615.

Imagine yourself having a romantic dinner in a restaurant located inside a cave overlooking the Andaman sea. Sounds lovely, right?  Krabi  houses an incredible restaurant, The Grotto at Railay beach. Fine dining, impeccable service and a stunning location. With all these attributes it’s a highly advised to book a table in advance. It’s important to organize your boat transfer too, since Railay beach is only accessible by boat.  The restaurant can take care of the transfers, just make sure to request it when booking your table.

Day 3 in Krabi,Thailand

Railay Beach & James Bond Island

A day trip to Railay Beach is a popular choice among  beach lovers. The scenery at Railay is jaw dropping with its unique limestone cliffs and turquoise blue waters. Do not forget to bring your camera on this beach trip. Most swimmers will be found on the west of the beach, as the east is covered with mangroves. Railay is easily reached from Ao Nang by a 15 min long tail boat ride. Once the boat is full with 8 people, your long tail boat driver will happily take you there for just SGD 3.00.

Another option for your day is a trip to James Bond Island made famous by the 1974 James Bond movie “The man with the golden gun”. Many important scenes from the movie were shot on location and although it was over 40 years ago, crowds still flock in their droves to witness it for themselves. James Bond Island is also a national park and all tours here allow for time to enjoy the turquoise waters and powdery white beaches. Tours normally include the price of canoeing and a scrumptious lunch at a floating village.

Once lunch is finished you will be taken to a monkey temple, known locally as Suwankuha Temple. The atmosphere inside the temple is peaceful and serene but outside, as the name suggests, you will encounter flocks of monkeys who are always happy to see tourists. Keep your valuables safe as they are of the thrifty kind – you have been warned!

You will also see beautiful statues of Buddha here and numerous stalagmites and stalactites embedded from the caves ceiling. The full price for a tour like this including all activates, sightseeing, meals and hotel pick up from Ao Nang is normally SGD 52.00.

For your last night head to The Peak, a rooftop bar with stunning views and well-prepared cocktails. After the drinks, you can enjoy a delicious seafood barbecue & buffet on the ground floor of Ao Nang Cliff Beach resort.
