Capella Singapore

Originally built as lodging for British officers of the Royal Artillery, the British Colonial buildings from the turn of the 20th century now hosts Capella Singapore. Coastal Defence Command was based on the island, and was used by the British Army till the late 50s.

The Suite

Along with the rooms in the main building, villas facing the South China Sea are dispersed around the property. The thick jungle blocks the rather unappealing view of large container ships, which was very appreciated.

All rooms are luxuriously appointed. What you expect from high end hotels can be found, from an excellent sound system to electric blinds- all . Take a couple of steps to a gorgeous dressing room and stunning bathroom. The bathtub is ideally placed by the window, the views of the sea and forest is surely a treat! The elegantly dark shower is only made better with Aesop amenities.

Bathtub with a view

Open the door to your wall to wall balcony to let in some fresh air- before sinking to the luxuriously plush bed.

The Capella is blissfully peaceful, no matter where you wander into. Gorgeous peacocks strut unafraid, occasionally staring curiously at guests-sometimes stealing bits of their breakfast.

The Capella’s breakfast and Sunday brunch was definitely one to remember. The exquisitely scrumptious selection featured several local delicacies, a nod to Asian hospitality. Sip on fresh coconut water still in its husk, or spread thick Kaya on toast. The presented pastries were soft and flaky- it was impossible to stop at one! By the spread of fruits available, fresh juices were made to order. Porridge and dim sum was offered for those who prefer eastern fare.

It didn’t stop there. The brunch added oysters and seafood into the mix, with stations presenting ice creams, meats, and the expected eggs to order. The naturally stunning setting and views was what tied it all together. Have your food in the serene gardens by the pool, gazing into the sea on the horizon.

One of the only two disappointments was the mariachi band. Its loud renditions of ‘Happy Birthday’ felt a tad out of place in the otherwise peaceful atmosphere. The other was the lack of a proper coffee machine, my morning cup did not live up to expectations.

The Capella is surely a treasure to have. Although only 20 minutes from the mainland, it feels worlds away from the bustling city. Luxurious paradise is only a taxi ride away, what a privilege!
